Picture this: You're cruising out on a clean, spacious boat with Captain Lenny at the helm. He's not just any guide - he's a local legend who knows these waters like the back of his hand. We'll start by getting you set up with some of the best rods and reels in the business. Don't worry if you're new to this; Lenny's got a knack for teaching and he'll have you casting like a pro in no time. As we troll the waters, keep your eyes peeled for jumping salmon or the telltale signs of a trout run. The afternoon light on Lake Michigan is something special, and there's nothing quite like the rush of a big fish hitting your line as the sun starts to dip. It's not just about the catch, though - it's about soaking in the pure Michigan beauty and maybe swapping a few fish tales along the way.
On this trip, we're all about trolling - the bread and butter of Great Lakes fishing. We'll be setting up multiple lines with a mix of lures and bait to cover all our bases. Downriggers? Check. Dipsy Divers? You bet. We might even break out the planer boards if the conditions are right. Lenny's always tweaking the spread to match what the fish are biting on that day. He's got an eye for reading the water and the electronics to spot those fish-holding structures. We'll be using a variety of lures - spoons, plugs, and maybe even some cut bait if the salmon are being picky. And don't worry about the technical stuff; Lenny's there to handle the gear and show you the ropes. Your job is to be ready when that rod starts bouncing!

Chinook Salmon: The king of the Great Lakes, Chinooks (or "Kings") are the heavyweights of our waters. These bruisers can tip the scales at over 30 pounds, and when they hit, you'll know it. They're famous for their hard-fighting nature and those blistering runs that'll have your drag screaming. Late summer and early fall is prime time for these silver bullets, as they start their spawning run up the river. There's nothing quite like the thrill of battling a big King all the way to the net.
Lake Trout: These deep-water denizens are the true natives of Lake Michigan. Lakers are known for their stamina - they might not make those fast runs like a salmon, but they'll test your arm strength with their dogged fights. They're typically hanging out in the cooler, deeper waters, so we'll be dropping our lines down to where they're lurking. Lakers are prized for their rich, orange flesh, making them excellent for the smoker or grill.
Steelhead: The acrobats of the bunch, Steelhead are rainbow trout that have spent time in the big lake before returning to the rivers. These chrome-bright beauties are known for their spectacular leaps and powerful runs. We target them year-round, but spring and fall can be especially hot. Hooking into a fresh-run Steelhead is like tying into a stick of dynamite - they'll have you grinning from ear to ear.
Rainbow Trout: While similar to their Steelhead cousins, the resident rainbow trout in the Manistee River offer a different kind of excitement. They're typically smaller but no less feisty. These colorful fish are known for their beautiful spotted patterns and their willingness to take a variety of lures and flies. They're active year-round, but spring and fall can see some exceptional fishing as water temperatures are ideal and insect hatches are in full swing.
Alright, folks, let's cut to the chase - if you're looking for a top-notch fishing experience in Manistee, this is it. Captain Lenny and the Slipknot Steelhead Charters crew are ready to put you on the fish. Whether you're dreaming of that trophy King salmon, a cooler full of tasty Lake Trout, or the acrobatic fight of a Steelhead, we've got you covered. Remember, we're talking about a private charter here - that means personalized attention and the flexibility to target what you're after. Don't let another season slip by without getting out on these world-class waters. Spots fill up fast, especially during peak runs, so don't wait to lock in your date. Grab your fishing buddies, or make it a family adventure, and let's make some lasting memories on the water. The fish are calling - are you ready to answer?

Chinook, or King Salmon, are the heavyweight champs of our local waters. These brutes average 15-30 pounds but can top 40. You'll find them in deep, cold parts of Lake Michigan in summer, moving into rivers to spawn in fall. Chinooks put up a dogged fight, often making long, powerful runs. Their rich, pink flesh makes them a favorite for the table too. Early mornings and evenings are usually best for targeting them. If you're trolling, try running flashers with cut bait about 30-60 feet down. When they're in the river, drifting skein or large flies can be deadly. Just be ready - when a big king hits, it'll test both your gear and your stamina!
Lake trout are the true natives of our deep, cold lakes. These big char average 5-15 pounds but can reach 40+. You'll usually find them suspended in deep water, especially during summer. They prefer temps under 55°F, so we often target them in spring and fall when they're shallower. Lakers are known for their hard-pulling, steady fights. They're also great eating, with firm, orange flesh. To hook into one, try jigging or trolling deep with spoons or cut bait. My go-to trick is using glow lures early morning or on cloudy days - lakers seem to zero in on that flash in low light.
Rainbow trout are a favorite target here in Manistee. These colorful fighters usually run 2-8 pounds, though we occasionally hook into monsters over 20. You'll find them in both rivers and lakes, often hanging around structure or drop-offs. Spring and fall are prime seasons when the water's cool. Rainbows put up an acrobatic fight, leaping and running - it's a blast on light tackle. They're also excellent eating if you want to keep a few. For the best shot at landing one, try drifting egg sacs or small spinners through deeper pools. Just remember to keep your line tight and rod tip up when they jump!
Steelhead are essentially sea-run rainbow trout, and they're one of the most prized catches in our waters. These fish spend time in Lake Michigan before running up rivers to spawn, typically weighing 5-15 pounds. Look for them in faster currents and deeper holes. Fall through spring is prime time, with some of the biggest fish coming in during colder months. Steelhead are known for their powerful runs and acrobatic leaps - be ready for an arm-numbing fight. They're also fantastic on the grill. To up your odds, try swinging flies or drifting spawn sacs near the bottom. Just be patient and ready to move spots if you're not getting bites.
